What Was.
Land Acknowledgement of Lenapehoking
The indigenous Lenape tribes of current-day Brooklyn & Queens (Canarsie, Munsee, and Mespat/Mespeatches) lived on the sacred waterway of Newtown Creek, then called Maspaethes, Mech-pe-is~it, or Massapichtit, which translates to "great brook with tides," "bad-water place," and "lands of those living here and there," respectively.
What is.
With colonization, came mass industrialization, which turned the once thriving estuary into a toxic wasteland. Origin of the oil & gas industry in America and site of the largest terrestrial oil spill in US history, Newtown Creek has faced centuries of abuse and neglect. We're here to put an end to that. With the help of other local environmental orgs, such as Newtown Creek Alliance, Sane Energy, North Brooklyn Parks Alliance, Kingland Wildflowers and others, we know we can help restore these waters to what they once were.
What will be
It's hard to imagine what this place once resembled...it''s even harder to think it can return. But we believe it will. Together, with the most creative, innovative, and hopeful minds, we know we can make anything happen in the city of dreams...like rewilding the first National Park in New York State...right here in Brooklyn
